Fanvid: Set Fire to the Third Bar

Fandom: Dexter
Characters: Dexter, Lila, Harry, Doakes and Brian.
Music: 'Set Fire to the Third Bar' by Snow Patrol & Martha Wainwright
Length: 3.21 minutes
Warnings: Violence, blood and guts. Spoilers for S1 and S2 only.
Description: A character study of Dexter Morgan exploring his relationships with several characters who know or come to learn about Dexter's dark deadly nature. I wanted to capture the fleeting moments of connection that Dexter shares with these people who get to see his inner monster before they are (directly or indirectly) destroyed by it, leaving Dexter alone in the world.
Author's Note: I'm a new Dexter fan and I've only seen the first two seasons of the show so far. So no spoilers in the comments please! This is also my first new fanvid in almost a year. My other fanvids are collected here.
Dedication: I want to say a huge thank you to [livejournal.com profile] cylune9 - my beta, my friend and my vidding hero. Do yourself a favour and check out Lune's own collection of fanvids on this link to cylune's master vid list.

yay, it's posted!!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again - the narrative is flawless, the clip choice are inspired but most of all, I find the general atmosphere & imagery haunting and mesmerizing. You are getting so good at vidding! Congrats on an amazing vid.

Thanks for linking my master vid list. ;)

*hugs* Thanks so much for all your support.

I find the general atmosphere & imagery haunting and mesmerizing.

On the show, one of the things I find most striking (and unnerving) is the amount of times Dexter breaks the fourth wall and stares directly at the viewer (I used as many shots like this as I could). It's a very extreme technique to bond the audience with the main character and draw you into a conspiracy with them. But normally you'd expect this style with cute engaging Ferris Bueller type characters. But no. On this show we get to have an intimate relationship with a psychotic serial killer.

You master list is masterful! I still revisit and rewatch your vids. :)

Very interesting observations about Dexter's unusual narrative structure. Perhaps it's an extreme experiment of making people walk in other people's shoes before judging! I remember you saying the voice overs were annoying.... Did you get used to them?

Yeah, I got used to them. I think Dexter's voice overs are like Baltar's Head Six. I disliked both elements at first but once I adjusted I couldn't imagine the show without them.
