Do you think Mike would have stopped Gus from holding Jesse prisoner or from killing Jesse if he refused to cook?

Probably not. He may have have said something in Jesse's favor but I don't think he would have risked his position in Gus' organization to get Jesse out of there. Or maybe. Jesse saved his life after all and Jesse was so darn adamant that the medical team attend to Mike. Maybe Mike would have switched his loyalty to Jesse instead of Gus as repayment for saving his life.

And Mike never seemed to question Gus.

Yeah, I have a problem with that too. Mike might have suspected that Gus was a monster but perhaps he was in denial or just didn't want to know in order to have a 'relatively' clean conscience (strong emphasis on the word 'relatively' here, I mean as relative as you could considering Mike is a cold blooded murderer). For example, I'm confident that if Gus had asked to kill Tomas, he wouldn't have done it. The only people we've seen Mike kill were criminals. And we know he was bothered by the guy who was beating his wife (if Mike was a sociopath, he wouldn't have cared at all about that woman) And Gus probably knew Mike's limits enough not to ask something like killing an innocent. So that's probably why Mike didn't ask questions about what Gus was doing ('Do you have any questions?' 'Yes but I know better not to ask')- I think he sincerely didn't want to know. Mike seems to be able to compartmentalize like that... for example, just before he died, when he told Walt they had a good thing going with Gus and if Walt just knew his place and be the obedient employee... he seemed to completely forget why Walt got in trouble with Gus in the first place... and it's the same reason why he didn't want Jesse to bring him his getaway bag! to protect Jesse! Damn it Mike!

I don't think Mike would have disobeyed Gus. Mike seemed to like Victor too, but he didn't raise any objections to Victor having his throat cut. But Walt raised hell when Gus threatened Jesse, even though doing so almost got Walt killed too.

Well, he raised his gun. But I know what you mean - Mike is the loyal, obedient, trusted employee. And I think he was bothered by Victor's death.. to me he seemed very disturbed at the bar when he was scratching Victor's blood from his jacket. And he was pretty angered when he told Jesse 'I had a guy, but now I don't!' But I also think Mike is very pragmatic. What is done is done, there's no point in raising hell and seeking revenge because his boss killed his partner. He enjoys his job and he wants to keep it. He can't bring Victor back to life so yeah, what's the point in raising hell risking everything?

Mike did assist Gus in manipulating Jesse though.

Yep, that's why I said that Mike didn't tell everything to Jesse. But he didn't lie either. When Jesse asked him if he was supposed to stay in Mexico, he told him the truth. And yes, it's a shame that Mike didn't want to be Jesse's friend outside of the business. :( But then again, neither does Walt. *is sad*.

ETA: One other thing about Mike, when Jesse asked Mike what Gus saw in him, Mike answered 'loyalty'. I don't think it's what Gus saw, it's what Mike is seeing in Jesse because he, himself is a very loyal person (to a fault of course, but the same can be said of Jesse. In fact the statement 'You're loyal to the wrong guy' could be applied to both Jesse and Mike).

Ooooh. I like this observation. I like it a lot. :D

Maybe Mike would have switched his loyalty to Jesse instead of Gus as repayment for saving his life.

Hard to say. I mean, yeah, Jesse saving Mike's life was probably the only thing that stopped Mike from shooting Walt in 5x1. Mike might have vouched for Jesse but I don't think Mike would have outright rebelled against Gus and risked his position for Jesse. Gus was the one paying Kaylee's trust fund and I think Mike would choose Kaylee over Jesse. Mike would've felt bad about it. Mike still liked Walt at the end of S3 and yet he was willing to kill Walt on Gus's orders.

That said, I agree that Gus wouldn't have asked Mike to kill Tomas. It's also significant that Gus makes his monstrous "I will kill your infant daughter" speech in a scene where Mike is not around. Mike was very perceptive. I'm sure he wasn't blind to Gus's darker nature. But Mike did have a "I don't ask. I just do my job." attitude towards the business.

I can also see why Mike had respect for Gus rather than Walt. Gus spent 20 years carefully building up his network. He seemed like a safe bet for earning bags of money and not getting caught. Walt was a reckless usurper who just rushed in and stole everything. Mike doesn't enjoy the thrill of "gambling" like Walt does.

But yeah, Mike's rant about how Walt should have known his place struck me as ironic for the same reason. Walt standing up to Gus was the only thing that could've saved Jesse's life. And then the reason Mike ends up dying is he put protecting Jesse Pinkman ahead of his own safety. Funny how protective feelings towards Jesse was the one thing Mike and Walt had in common in the end.
